Aboveground Storage Tank (AST) Compliance Training

Petro Classroom’s Aboveground Storage Tank (AST) Compliance Training course is designed to teach owners and operators about the operation of ASTs and the regulations and standards that must be followed to stay in compliance and prevent releases. This course includes the following chapters:


Chapter 1: Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC)
This chapter provides an overview of SPCC regulations, how to determine what type of SPCC plan your facility requires, and the required contents of an SPCC plan.


Chapter 2: Steel Tank Standards
This course will cover an overview of the different types of ASTs and fabrication standards including American Petroleum Institute (API), Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) established criteria or standards for the manufacture of ASTs.  Some of these AST manufacturing standards that are covered in this course include API 650, UL 142, UL 2085, UL 80 and concrete tanks.


Chapter 3: Fire Codes
This chapter will review AST fire codes regulating the safe storage of flammable and combustible liquids based on OSHA and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).  The chapter will provide an overview of NFPA 1, NFPA 30, NFPA 30A, International Fire Codes (IFC) and other requirements applicable to ASTs.


Chapter 4: Common Tank Systems
This chapter will review the workings of common tank systems and which standards apply to these systems, including:
•    Aviation Fuel Systems – PEI RP 1300-13
•    Motor Fuel – PEI RP 200 and 600
•    Bulk Fuel – PEI RP 800
•    Generator – PEI RP 1400


Chapter 5: Tank System Components
This chapter provides an in-depth look at the components of an AST tank system and common equipment issues that may cause leaks and require regular monitoring, maintenance and repair. 


Chapter 6: SP001 Inspection Standards
This chapter covers the Steel Tank Institute’s national standard SP001 for periodic inspections and integrity testing.


Chapter 7: Field Constructed Tanks
This chapter touches on STI SP001 inspections for specific size and capacity of field erected aboveground storage tanks.


Chapter 8: Hands-On Training Checklist
This chapter will review the STI SP001 forms and inspection checklists for ASTs.


Chapter 9: SP001 Inspection Requirements
This chapter will cover the inspection standards and guidelines and provide real-life photos of what to look for in the AST when performing inspections.


Chapter 10: Gensets
This chapter reviews the different types of emergency backup generators.


Chapter 11: Interpreting SP001 Inspection Reports
This chapter reviews how to interpret SP001 inspection reports and provides examples of photos taken during an actual inspection.

 
Chapter 12: Common Maintenance Issues
This chapter shows common AST maintenance issues that if not repaired, can cause leaks, releases and dangerous conditions.
