Illinois Class A/B UST Operator Course for Generator Facility

If you are an A/B Operator of a non-dispensing facility (e.g., hospitals, schools, government entities) with underground storage tanks for emergency generators, this is the course for you. This course will fulfill your Class A/B Certification requirement and is approved by the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM).

Illinois UST Class A/B Operators may choose from a 1-YEAR CERTIFICATION or a 4-YEAR CERTIFICATION course and must renew their training accordingly:

  • A/B Operators who choose the one-year course will need to renew their training in one year, but will not be required to take non-compliance retraining in response to a Notice of Violation.

  • A/B Operators who choose the four-year course will need to renew their training every 4 years, and will be required to take non-compliance retraining if they receive a Notice of Violation.

Illinois updated their UST regulations to incorporate the revised 2015 Federal UST requirements with an effective date of October 13, 2018. Petro Classroom’s Class A/B/C course reflects these updates and includes compliance deadlines for the major provisions.

Class A and B Operators must complete the following 8 chapters in order to obtain their Illinois Class A/B/C UST Operator Certificate:

Chapter 1: Introduction

This chapter provides an overview of the Federal Regulations governing UST systems. A/B UST Operators will learn how preventing UST compliance and operational issues will decrease maintenance costs and increased profits for their facilities.

Chapter 2: Components of Tank Systems

This chapter is an in-depth look at the components of an emergency generator UST tank system and common equipment issues that may cause leaks and require regular monitoring, maintenance and repair.

Chapter 3: Release Detection and Reporting

This chapter delves into the various methods of release detection in compliance with state and federal law and the importance of proper installation and maintenance of monitoring equipment.

Chapter 4: State Requirements

This chapter will discuss the specific and unique requirements of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM).

Chapter 5: Temporary & Permanent Closure

This chapter discusses the rule requirements and recordkeeping for placing a tank in temporary closure or permanent closure and changing the service of a tank.

Chapter 6: Operator Training

This chapter defines the duties and responsibilities of the Class A, B and C Operators as well as the certification training and documentation requirements for each class of operator.

Chapter 7: Class C Operator Training

This chapter provides an overview of the tank field and the components of a tank system along with an in-depth look at emergency response procedures and the responsibilities of a Class C Operator. This is the actual course your Class C Operators will need to take in order to become Class C Certified. It is a great review on what the Class C Operator needs to know and what you as a Class A or B Operator are responsible for making sure they know. This chapter includes a breakout section for operators at marina facilities.

Chapter 8: Inspections

This chapter will cover the State’s compliance inspections and the mandated periodic owner/operator inspections (e.g., 30-Day Walkthrough Inspections) as set forth by the 2015 UST Regulations.
